Nicole Chung lost both of her adoptive parents suddenly within two years of each other. Living across the country, hamstrung by Covid restrictions, limited by financial concerns and the demands of parenting her own children, she struggled to find ways to support them. Named a "Best Book of the Year" by Time, Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire, Booklist, USA Today, Elle, Good Housekeeping, New York Times, Electric Literature, and Today--this intimate memoir "explores the difficult emotional terrain of grief, while also delivering a powerful social commentary that poses vital questions about access to medical care and the meaning of home and family," writes Qian Julie Wang for the Washington Post. Chung will be in conversation with Shore Lit founder Kerry Folan.

The surprising narrator of this slim novel is a queer mountain lion who roams the Hollywood Hills outside “ellay"—misunderstood, lonely, very hungry, and consistently bewildered by human behavior. Henry Hoke introduces us to the strange and wonderful voice of a trenchant feline observer who is yearning to connect, yet wracked by limitations. One of the Washington Post's "50 Notable Works of Fiction in 2023," Open Throat was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award and longlisted for the Mark Twain American Voice in Literature Award. Hoke will be in conversation with Shore Lit Founder Kerry Folan. The event will also feature a monologue from the book performed by local actor Mike Sousa.
